Diona Doherty: Bold, Brilliant & Unapologetically Herself — A Portrait Session for the Fringe Festival

There’s something magnetic about photographing someone who knows exactly who they are — and brings that energy into every frame.

When I photographed Diona Doherty, the brilliant Northern Irish comedian, actress, and writer, ahead of her Fringe Festival performance, the shoot was electric from start to finish.

Known for her fearless comedy, sharp wit, and unforgettable presence on both stage and screen, Diona arrived on set full of her trademark humour and warmth. My goal was simple — to create portraits that reflected her strength, wit, and the spark that makes her instantly recognisable.

We shot a mix of classic portraits and expressive, movement-driven moments that captured her dynamic personality. Between shots, Diona filled the space with laughter and conversation — the kind of energy every photographer hopes for. There’s an ease about her that makes you feel instantly at home, and that confidence shines through every image.

The portraits celebrate more than just her career; they reveal the human side of performance — the power, vulnerability, and connection that make storytelling so powerful.

As a Belfast-based lifestyle and portrait photographer, I’m always drawn to people who use their creativity to connect with others. Diona embodies that beautifully. This shoot reminded me why I love what I do — capturing the essence of people who inspire and entertain, while staying true to themselves.

If you’d like to create portraits that reflect your own personality — whether for a creative project, performance, or simply to celebrate where you are right now — I’d love to hear from you.
