Behind the Lens with Declan Lawn & Adam Patterson — The Minds Behind Blue Lights
Every so often, people walk into my studio who leave a real impression — not because they arrive with an entourage or any fanfare, but because of their quiet confidence and creative energy. That was exactly the case with Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, the writing and directing duo behind the brilliant BBC series Blue Lights.
When Declan and Adam first came in for their profile shots, they couldn’t have been more unassuming. Just two friendly guys, relaxed and curious, with a clear vision for what they wanted. But as soon as we started shooting, I quickly realised these weren’t just any clients — they were storytellers in every sense.
What I loved most about working with them was the collaboration. They directed me as much as I directed them, in the best possible way. They knew how they wanted to be seen — honest, grounded, and real — which made the session flow effortlessly. We played with light, mood, and expression until we found the perfect balance that captured both their personalities and their partnership.
It’s always fascinating to photograph creative people, but Declan and Adam brought something special to the shoot: that filmmaker’s instinct for narrative and emotion. You could see how their storytelling mindset shapes everything they do, even a simple headshot session.
They might describe themselves as “just two guys getting some profile shots,” but make no mistake — these are two of the most talented writer-directors working in television today. Blue Lights has earned huge praise for its authenticity, tension, and heart — and after meeting them, it’s easy to see why.
Working with Declan and Adam reminded me that the best portraits aren’t just about how someone looks — they’re about capturing who they are. And in this case, that meant creativity, humility, and a quiet brilliance that speaks for itself.
